Beginning Wicca

Course Description
In this class you will explore the basics of the growing belief system called Wicca.

Goals of the course:

    • Become knowledgeable of the history of Wicca
    • Become more attuned to the Universe through interaction with the gods and nature
    • Become acceptable of yourself and others through the practice of Wicca
    • Learn the basis for your own rituals, spells, and workings
    • Expand your realms of thought, ideas, and philosophies in order to grasp the true ideas behind Wicca
    • Prepare yourself for service to the gods, the ancients, and to the community

Recommended Text
While there are no required texts that must be purchased for this class, there will be links to articles and online books available for you. These links will be based on the lessons at hand or to assist in answering questions that may arise during class. The students are highly encouraged to read them and understand them so they will be able to move along with the rest of the class.

Course Requirements
Due to the various time zones of the students and the hectic schedules that we all have all communications between the students and instructor should take place on the various message boards that are placed throughout the classroom.

Class participation (1/3 of grade): Completion of reading assignments and active participation in discussion by all students is required so the student may be successful in the studies. Necessary absences must be cleared in advance with me.

Homework assignments (1/3 of grade): All homework assignments will be completed and turned in to me via e-mail no later than 24 hours before the next class.

Research paper (1/3 of grade): A 5-7 page paper (plus bibliography) on one or several aspects of Witchcraft that you find interesting, using at least two books or articles (not counting web sources). The topic and preliminary bibliography must be discussed with me by Week 7. The paper will be due no later than Wednesday of Week 11, by noon.

You are granted 1% of your grade.
Class participation & attendance - 33%
Informal writing assignments - 33%
Research Project = 33%
Total - 100%

Disabilities:
Anyone that can type, use voice activated software, or have another type for them and able to do the work is welcome. The instructor will make allowances for disabilities, but they have to reasonable requests. The instructor will not know if you have a disability that may require allowances unless you inform him.

Class Schedule
Since students seem to move at their own pace, no matter how much the cattle prod is used, the class will be taught via topics. Class will be held each week unless there is a holiday or something that may come up. The topics that will be covered include, but are not limited to:

What is Wicca?
History of Wicca from ancient(?) times to present.
Legalities of Wicca
Traditions – the denominations of Wicca
Legends and tales within Wicca – Who did who did what did how…
Living Wicca – Be the best witch you can be
Sabbats and Esbats
Elementals, Dragons, etc. – the creatures and energies of Wicca
Rituals – the where, how and why of it all
Tools of the ritual
Divination – knowing it all
Magic and Spells- the one thing everyone wants to learn
Notions, potions, and powders – the herbal aspect of Wicca
Correspondences – You want me to that when? And with what?
And any other subject that might come up in the discussions…
